Birds of happiness

All bird sculptures are handmodelled from soft chamotte clay and dried on the hot summer sunshine before being fired in special ceramic kiln at almost thousand degrees centigrades.

The hand glazing process and ancient raku firing bring a final surprise to each of the pieces making  every single one unique with their own story. There is a life happiness in each bird sculpture, born out of synergy of all four elements, fire, water, earth and air. Holding a bird in our hand we feel one with the nature.

STORY BEHIND BIRDS

Three days running an enormous baby bird hawk stood about in front of my studio window watching me. Even though she was fearless, not worried about my dog or the neighbour’s cat I thought she needed help and I contacted an ornithology specialist and learned that it was the time for the flying practise for these birds. They spend their time on the ground for a week or even ten days flapping their wings and practising. All along being fed by their parents – who were apparently so fast that I missed their dinner time.

But I read on the Wikipedia that “seeing hawks means that you are on the right path in life, and your spirit animal is there to make sure you keep on this path. … The hawk will help you to gain confidence and realize that you have great potential to take initiative and see your goals and dreams through to the end.” It was fun to read that as I was starting a ceramic business at the time and was choosing a new path. My ceramic birds just flew out of my fingers.

Raku firing really is one of the most natural techniques that you can encounter in working with clay. In loose translation the word “raku” means contentment and enjoyment in happy accident..

Originally created for the Korean tea ceremony, and further developed in 16th century Japan.

In raku firing all of nature’s elements are used in the process – earth, fire, air and water and together they create an unpredictable and unique style .

The process of Raku firing differs from other firing methods because it requires the fast removal of the piece from the furnace at their maximum temperature. While red hot, the pieces can be reduced using smoke from flammable materials, or enhanced with alcohol, or decorated with horse/pet hair and feathers.

It is a rather dangerous, unpredictable and amazing process.
